Green Grease partners with local governments to help discourage residents from pouring used cooking oil down drains. The oil can clog and damage sewer pipes. Local government officials report that aside from their aging sewer pipes that lead to raw sewage spills in area creeks, rivers and streams—their number one problem is residents who pour an average of 25-30 gallons of grease down drains monthly, further damaging the aging pipes.
Green Grease, a partner with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Waste Wise program, works with local cities and county public works (solid waste, recycling, sewer and watershed management) departments to collect used cooking grease as part of a city- or countywide curbside recycling program. We also work with governments in educating customers about the recycling program.
